A complete ‘back to basic’ approach that will effectively teach the correct recitation of the Noble Qur'an, starting from joining/spelling letters words, moving onto rules and application of makharijul huruf (i.e. points of articulation), sifatul huruf (i.e. manners of articulation), and practice reading of the Holy Qur'an (i.e. nazra/tilawah).
The preparatory stage consists of:
- Teaching of a full Qur'anic Arabic qai’da;
- Etiquettes with the Qur'an and its pre-requisites;
- Correct recitation of at least the last 10 surahs in Juz Amma;
- Group based weekly sessions, with one to one recitals during each session;
- Weekly coursework.
I give this course a 5-star rating simply because it has been an amazing opportunity to study with a master of the recitation of the Qur’an. What I found most beneficial was the fact that it was a one to one class, therefore I was able to progress at my own pace. I highly recommend this course for anyone looking to study the Qur’an because it’s delivered by an expert and is well structured.
The course is very rewarding and I prefer the one to one structure. I have learnt a lot. Management of the course is excellent. The Shaykh teaches everybody according to their need so you don't have to feel pressured into keeping up with the rest of the class or feel you are held back because of other students.
Alhamdulilah, I have really benefited from the 1-1 learning, which has addressed areas I need to focus on. The sessions are well organised and I am able to schedule the time around my convenience at home.
The Qur'anic Recitation Course with Essential Islam caters to all the students need, I started as a beginner and progressed to Advance group ,with the help of the teachers like Ustadh Hamza. It was rough start for me as an old person learning all the basics, and not knowing how to use the phone for reading. But the support team was always there to help ( Allah SWT bless them). I would recommend any member of my family or friends to study with Essential Islam. They are like a family to me now.
An Excellent Course; I would highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to improve their Tajweed And pronunciation of the Holy Quran. I study with great teachers, who are masters of their subjects, not only are they great at reciting the Qur'an, but they are also experts at identifying and correcting our recitation, and are very accessible and easy going, make you feel very comfortable. The background staff, go unnoticed at times, however, they form the core of Essential Islam, and I have never had a bad experience with any of them, each one of them are good at their roles, and provide great assistance whenever and wherever the need arises, all of this on top of being great human beings. The course is very much accessible and easy to navigate, we are kept well up to date with everything, and it is a friendly atmosphere. I'd encourage people who wish to study the deen to study with us at Essential Islam, the multitude of courses offered have something for everyone. Furthermore, they will be met by great staff and teachers who not only teach to an impeccable standard, but also understand issues a student may go through, something which I feel is first on the priority list when looking for a teacher/institution.
Alhumdullilah, from finding this Course, to enrolling and progressing weekly, it has been a great pleasure and truly a blessing from Allah Almighty. Tajwid has been an area which I have consistently struggled with, but Alhumdulillah through Essential Islam’s guidance and feedback, I have been able to make improvements and become a more confident reciter. This has helped me in my daily Salaah and Holy Qur’an Recitation. It is of great importance to mention that any success that I have attained throughout this semester, is due to my teachers considerate, compassionate and patient teaching. Alhamdulilah I think it's been brilliant. I have learnt so much over the last 2 years. It's strange because most of it has been basic things, but it has made a huge difference to the way I recite. I have become a lot more confident when reading. The classes have helped me gain more confidence when teaching Qur’an and Tajwid. It was really frustrating in the early days when it took weeks/months to get a pass on a surah, but it has most definitely been worth it, and I can see the fruits of it now. I'm also grateful for all that has been made available for us from the comfort of our own homes. May Allah bless and reward all the teachers and admins that have made this course possible.
Signing up to Essential Islam Beginners Tajweed course is probably the best decision I’ve ever made! I’ve always been skeptical about online Tajweed courses as you’re not physically present with the teacher. Alhamdulilah classes have been absolutely fantastic, I don't think you all realise how grateful I am to Essential Islam and Ustadh Hamza for delivering such a fantastic course. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would come this far in learning how to recite the Holy Qur'an with tajweed. I had previously taken lessons and had been disheartened with the lack of progress and inconsistencies with the lessons.
Alhamdulilah these lessons are always on time and regular which helps with learning progress. Ustadh is also fun yet serious when it comes to lessons...it's just the perfect balance.

After several years of repeatedly studying beginner and intermediate level tajweed courses, I was so thrilled to finally come across an Advanced Level Tajweed Course. However, I was not sure how a few minutes a week spent in class would improve my recitation.
I am grateful to Shaykh Abd Allah and to the admin who encouraged me to continue my journey. Alhamdulillah the time did not matter as the results spoke for themselves.
I taught my children what I learnt and soon saw the barakah of those few minutes. They progressed rapidly in reading the Quran with fluency and wanted to join the class too. Alhamdulillah we are in the same class and truly humbled to learn from Shaykh Abd Allah. .

Alhamdulilah. It's been nearly 2 months since my two teenage daughters have joined Essential Islam. In this short space of time they have learned so much, and this is because of the effort and passion behind the teaching. In today’s busy lifestyle, balancing school studies and deen can be challenging, but I believe online learning is the way forward. Signing up to the EI Beginners Tajweed course has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. There’s nothing more humbling than being corrected on a surah you thought you’d nailed. Showing up to live lessons to receive feedback is a spiritual journey. It’s a beating to the nafs. The feeling of being corrected in your recitation makes you ponder on the way you stand in your prayer to the Lord of all worlds. The path to ehsaan in reciting the Quran isn’t easy but all we can do is show up and give our best for only Allah knows our intention.
After 3 years of studying Tajweed with Essential Islam, in my opinion it's still easily the best out there. I'd strongly recommend them whatever level you're at. Essential Islam caters for students at all levels: from beginners with no prior knowledge to students proficient in the rules and theory, but looking to practice and perfect their recitation - they've got you covered.
Each class is excellently planned, structured and organised and delivered in a learner-centred way. Credit and gratitude are due to both the competent, professional and dedicated admin team and the extraordinary teachers. Not only are the teachers well qualified and experienced, but they nurture and grow your potential. If you're looking for somewhere to learn Qur'an online - this is it.

As a working person, I had been looking for a suitable Tajweed program which I could fit around a busy schedule. Alhamadulillah I felt as though the Essential Islam’s beginner program came to me rather than me looking for it; it was an opportunity I grasped with both hands.
Before starting the course, I was fairly nervous and worried about my pronunciations – I felt as though I may not be able to overcome some of the foundational errors I had. These worries however, quickly vanished within a few lessons through the encouragement of Ustadh Hamza and being present (albeit virtually) within the class with fellow students – I felt as though everyone encouraged each other.
I feel the course was very well paced throughout the year and the delivery cannot be praised enough. Ustadh Hamza, MashaAllah, is a brilliant teacher and really tailors the class to each student exceptionally well. He always greatly encourages you, even when you feel you are not making much progress.
Alhamdulillah, by the end of the course I felt I had come a long way and overcome a lot of mispronunciations and learnt the method of slow and good reading. It all takes time and constant effort but through the encouragement of the Ustadh and Essential Islam team, huge progress can be made.
I pray to continue learning with Essential Islam and continue to slowly build on the foundations.
I would highly recommend this program to anyone who can commit to part-time learning, may be a nervous person, may be worried about foundational errors, or is just looking to improve their recitation.
Before applying for the Tajweed Programme, I was unable to recite the Quran at all and I was need of a Quran teacher. I was not too sure how to go about to even begin finding one! Alhumdulilah one day I came across the Tajweed programme by Essential Islam and realised this would be perfect for me to relearn how to recite the Quran. The flexibility provided by Essential Islam is perfect and allows you to work at your own pace.
During the course, I found Ustadh Humzah to be a very good teacher. His teaching style makes every student comfortable and he treats every student individually working with them to improve them every single week. Ustadh is also available to ask any questions at any time.
Following my first year, I was able to complete the recitation of the Quran for the first time in 14 years! Alhumdulilah

The classes are online and there is ample opportunity to recite to the Ustadh who has helped me to improve my recitation significantly. I can say with certainty that through the Essential Islam tajwid course I have a closer relationship with the Qur'an. I intend to continue my tajwid studies and aim to complete tue advanced class, inshaAllah.
I started my journey with Essential Islam last September. With my initial goal to be able to read the Holy Qur’an with clear understanding of the rules and pronunciation.
I like, many others, had been educated by my local Imam through community run classes. Although I was very grateful for any knowledge that I had gained, I wanted to develop myself further.
It was very evident from my very first lesson that I had been instilled with habits that required a lot of work.
This is where I must commend Ustadha Shabeena for her patience and understanding towards me, as I embarked on a new challenge! The lesson were weekly with the compulsory element of homework mid-week.
I found this method of learning flexible, as I had time for the deadlines to adhere to, and if there were any issues, I knew I had Ustadha just a phone/message away. This gave my learning structure and routine, which is vital as you progress through this course.
On the Google classroom there are videos to support every lesson and I benefited hugely from these, as they have supported me to understand my learning, as well as becoming independent.
I know some people believe that face to face is the best option for them. But, with the evolving era that we live in and the advances of technology, I would urge you to try this method of learning, You get the expert knowledge of teachers, and as I studied under Ustadha Shabeena, she was able to guide me through the course.
I have really enjoyed my journey so far with Essential Islam. I have progressed so far with my reading. This is due to the excellent teaching that is delivered by them. If you think that you would like to improve/learn, then this is an incredible platform to gain expert knowledge from. I now look forward to continuing my journey with Essential Islam further.
I started the Tajweed beginners course last year and wasn’t too sure what to expect as I’ve not previously done an online course, I was initially looking for a face to face course however I was limited for options and went for it. I am so glad I took the opportunity, my recitation has come so far and I’ve only just completed beginners, I will now be signing up to the intermediate course.
Looking back now I don’t think I would of kept up with a face to face course as with children it can get difficult but this course has been very flexible with a weekend class and then weekly homework, not too much pressure but also allows you to progress at your own pace in your own time without letting you slip. The prompt feedback and communication with Ustada Shabeena is excellent and she is always happy to offer support and advice and is also really encouraging with her teaching.
The lessons are all readily available online and the structure of the course is great, can’t fault it. I’ve now been confident enough to teach my little one and I know I have the lessons online to fall back on if needs be. Looking forward to starting again in September In Sha Allah.
I had always wanted to learn to recite the Quran with Tajweed but had no idea where to begin until my brother, whose children were enrolled in the children's course, mentioned that they also did adult courses, so I inquired and enrolled.
This consisted of 35 weeks of weekly online classes with weekly homework to submit, as well as feedback on recitation in class and homework. And you begin at the very beginning, with the pronunciation of the Arabic letters, progressing to Qaida and incorporating those learned methods into reciting the Juz Amma.
This has been a journey, and I am extremely proud of how far I've progressed because you can hear and see the difference for yourself. It hasn't always been easy, but it has required a lot of practise and patience.
I was in a sister-only class with the accomplished Ustada Shabeena, who has been nothing short of amazing, patient, and encouraging. She provided constructive feedback, which I found extremely beneficial to my development; without her methods and guidance, I would not have progressed as far as I did.
The on-demand videos were also very useful to me. These recordings are from Ustad Humza's class, and I discovered that listening to them provided me with tajweed-improvement tips. Furthermore, the videos that included the recitation of the Qaida and each Surah were extremely beneficial because both seeing and reciting them aided in classwork and homework.
Although reciting in front of a class can be intimidating at first, I discovered that taking classes online worked well for me and made me feel very comfortable. This was the best approach in my opinion because I could use and adapt any reading advice given to a student for my own recitation.
I just want to thank Ustad Humza, Ustada Shabeena, and Brother Naveed for sharing their knowledge with us and for their support. All of this has helped me improve my recitation of the Glorious Qur'an, and I am looking forward to moving on to the pre-intermediate class, inshallah

I have benefitted a lot from the Tajweed course and found Ustadha Shabeena’s lessons and her way of teaching is incredibly positive. She knows our strengths and weaknesses and supports us with so much encouragement. What has been exceptional is her understanding of our other commitments as we juggle around to learn tajweed. I began my journey with Essential Islam last year with the Tajweed beginners course, after seeing how well my son was doing with them. Masha Allah! Ustadha Shabeena is really good teacher and she makes me feel confident enough to recite in front of her and the class during the skype sessions, all without feeling nervous. She has so much patience with us and gives us time to improve in our reciting.
I started the beginners tajweed course in September. Initially, I was very nervous, but with sister Shabeena's guidance and support I managed to conquer this. The initial step is the hardest, but once you start it is absolutely worth it!!! The video tutorials by Ustadh Hamza are fantastic to help you with practising. It's all about breaking old habits and learning new sounds and concepts. Sister Shabeena is an outstanding teacher and will breaks down the lesson to the finer details. Providing you with step by step instruction, which is super beneficial in learning. She's available any time for any extra support. It is the best decision l have taken and my only regret is l wish l did it much sooner.
I have been studying Tajweed with Ustadha Shabeena for the past two years. Initially, I was apprehensive about starting the course as I was expected to return to beginner’s level, despite having lessons for four years prior to this with another institution. With years of Tajweed coaching by a high calibre teacher behind me, I was convinced my level was anything but beginners.
Nevertheless, I eventually succumbed to the fact that there was still a lot more work to be done before I could even reach a level deemed appropriate for the Advance level. It eventually came to light that my progression so far had been hindered by my inability to give up bad habits developed from reading the Quran the way it is taught based on the traditional Indian subcontinent way (as I was accustomed to). The other factor I realised was that, although my previous esteemed teacher had helped me to develop a strong foundation in Tajweed, the teaching style implemented wasn’t enough to motivate me to work harder.
After two years of Ustadha’s coaching involving her meticulous corrections and repetitive drilling, wrapped up in her never-ending positivity and patience, Alhamdulillah I have finally been able to progress and acquire a confidence level that I have never reached before. I feel very blessed to have had Ustadha Shabeena as a teacher and I am incredibly grateful to the Essential Islam team for the programme of study they deliver, which guarantees results. As a complete newbie to the Arabic Alphabet and language, Ustadha Shabeena has been guiding me with very detailed feedback on my homework. She was also very attentive, patient and has always encouraged me all along the course to persevere. This was a great motivating factor. Personally I have enjoyed the courses with her.
